S心M & SOUL
Single player, narrative driven, action RPG
About the Project
This game is a capstone project I worked on with 5 other people. We split the responsibilities between members, met regularly to discuss plans, and collaborated online for a semester to complete this project. We used various communication tools such as a kanban board to track/organize progress and GitHub to collaboratively work on the game.
Aside from group planning and pre-production processes, I mainly contributed to visual design, 3D asset creation, world building, animation, and rigging.
Please visit the project site for more information. The demo level is also available online to download.
Game Summary
S心M & SOUL is a single player, narrative driven action adventure game. You are placed in an unknown world, filled with musical elements, and a character that looks like a dumpling tells you that he's your brother?! Follow your “brother” and attack squishy monsters, while traversing through an unknown musical world!
Character Design
Based on the character profiles created, I made the following character designs. These are some character turnarounds I made which show what the front, side, and backs of the characters look like. The first challenge I faced was expressing the personality of each character. To do this, I made sure to add unique features to portray whether characters are meant to look stronger, cuter, or older. The next challenge I faced was creating features that identify enemies. All bosses sit on a plate and weak mobs don't have legs at all. The last challenge I faced was trying to accurately portray real dim sum foods as personifications and make the designs recognizable compared to the real foods they are based off of.

First we have Xiao Long Bao, our main character who is supposed to appear young, cute, and round. We decided to make him a xiao long bao because it is the roundest type of dumpling. Off to the side, we can see some of his facial expressions which are meant to be displayed along with his dialogue in-game.

This is the mentor, Gyoza. He was the first dumpling created by the main character's parents so he looks older, has burnt skin, stains on his wrapper.

This is Egg Tart. She is a friendly NPC who is supposed to be bright and cheery.

Now we have the character designs for the bosses and weaker mobs. The bosses all sit on a walking plate, while the weaker mobs do not have legs. The weaker mobs are designed to look similar to slime mobs which are common beginner enemies in role-playing games.
3D Character Models

After creating the character designs, I modelled them (the characters above) in Maya and created basic materials for them. I then split the responsibilities of rigging and animation with my group mate.
Environment Design
For the Sum and Soul demo, I blocked out the environments for the tutorial level and World 1. The team modelled the environments while keeping the key visuals I painted in mind (seen below).

Assets Imported into Unity
The images below are gameplay screenshots. Not all assets pictured are modelled by me.
I adjusted the scene lighting and added a water shader to certain meshes.
